Dionyx is an organisation for open-minded, LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual & others) youth/students in Maastricht & Limburg. We organise events to bring open-minded students together and to make the LGBT topic more open to society. Our events vary from monthly theme parties to social activities e.g. movie nights, getaways and debates. Our goal is to offer a place where students can feel at home but also where they can socialize and interact with other open-minded people. Our organisation is part of COC Limburg as a working group. COC Limburg is the general LGBT organisation of Limburg.
In 2015 a group of students noticed that there was a need for more social activities for the LGBTQIA people in Maastricht and Limburg, we started making some drafts which have now become reality! Our organisation is a new concept since January 2016. It was established by students from Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and young volunteers from COC Limburg. Nowadays the team of volunteers is growing and more students participate in our organisation.
Social interaction between LGBT students
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth/students have a greater risk to feel lonely than heterosexuals. A lot of lesbian, gay or bisexual students have a negative self-image regarding their non-heterosexuality, and students with a negative self-image are more likely to feel lonely than others. That is why social interaction between LGBT students is very important. We as an organisation have monthly activities where they can socialize with each other. Our activities are mostly held in the building of COC Limburg (Bogaardenstraat 43, Maastricht).
How many students are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, other…?
1 person out of 10 is homosexual and roughly 1 out of 25 does not fit in the binary of man/woman. And in Maastricht and throughout Limburg there are more than 14.500 students at University Maastricht and more than 15.000 students at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Zuyd). Limburg and especially Maastricht has a lot of international students. These students have different backgrounds and it may be that they are not familiar with the LGBT topic. We strive to make the LGBT topic more acceptable under students and that is why we organise debates, lectures, and other activities.
A place for personal development
When students participate in our team, they are helping to create a more sustainable environment for open-minded, LGBT students. It also gives students new opportunities for personal development of their skills and it helps to become more socially involved in society. Are you a student looking for new opportunities?
